The job search. It can be a struggle as you often face self-doubt after a series of rejections. Do note that rejections need not deter you, as according to TalentWorks, most people usually apply to about 20 jobs before they get their first interview, and several people go through ten or more interviews before they get hired. Still, If you wish to remain resilient, the best way to do so is by remaining organized and devising a structured plan. Here are a few tips that can help you structure your job search and ensure that you are on the path towards success.

Clean up Your Workspace

According to recent studies, workspaces that are cluttered tend to be quite distracting and can decrease your productivity. Thus, ensure that your workspace is comfortable and free of distractions, so your attention is completely focused on the job search. Make sure that you look at it as though it is an office outside of your home that is required to remain organized. Or imagine that your workspace is somebody else’s house. Then, the food crumbs and unwashed dishes may seem a little gross to you and push you to clean up space. This is applicable in the case of your computer desktop and browser tabs as well. Ensure that they are clean and do not contain any distractions.

Organize Your Files

On your computer, make sure to create a new folder titled “job search.” In this folder, add a few more subfolders that will hold your cover letters, resume drafts, as well as your work samples. It is also a good idea to formulate templates for each of these documents based on the job category, in case you are applying for different job roles. After creating a template, it becomes easier to customize it, so it aligns with a specific job listing without having to start from scratch each time.

Also, always keep a record of job applications after submitting them. You can create a basic spreadsheet, which contains different columns for the company name, role, date applied, the job posting link URL, status (“open” or “rejected”), and a few other required notes. A few sites recommend the addition of several other fields.

Keep Updating

Glassdoor has found that HR only spends about 10 seconds going over your resume. Is your CV capable of standing out, or have you cluttered it with excessive information? Did you distinctly present your skills?

This is a crucial point to remember, especially if you have not been getting any interviews. Keep updating your resume and cover letter continuously. Note that your potential employer will probably receive a lot of applications. While they are seeking an ideal candidate, they are also looking for any reason to reject you.

It is prudent to read your resume and cover letter out loud before submitting it. It makes it easier to catch anything that sounds too vague or unnatural. It also helps to catch any grammatical mistakes that will automatically land you in the rejected pile.

Set a fixed schedule

Once you start looking at your job search as a job within itself, you’ll remember to clock the hours. The majority of people do not spend their entire day in this process, as it causes burnout. However, you can set aside several hours each day for this” job” as there are only so many new job postings that you will encounter. Divide your time between job searching and submitting applications and remain consistent with it.

Make Use of Job Sites and Social Networks

Establish bookmarks in your browser for important job sites, such as LinkedIn, Indeed, Monster, Snagajob, and Google Jobs. Browse them every day to remain updated regarding new postings and note that anything that is a couple of weeks old may be outdated.

Leverage your networking skills as well. According to research, 70% of job openings are not published on job sites, and about 80% of all job roles are filled up only using networking. On social media platforms, notify friends, family, and those who are in similar situations that you are looking for a job.

Keep Your Foot on The Gas

A few job sites recommend applying for at least 10-15 jobs each day. However, this number depends on what you’re looking for as well as your skill level. It is crucial to note that quality applications are more important than quantity. In case you are seeking skilled jobs, never opt for LinkedIn’s “Easy Apply” or any other alternatives that do not seek cover letters. Even though cover letters are not generic as a resume and must be customized each time, the effort is worth it because it can help you present your distinctiveness as to why you particularly deserve the job more than anyone else.

In case you do not have any luck, try changing your approach. However, as mentioned before, stick to a set schedule and always keep track of your submissions. Remain resilient, and you will eventually find one that you deserve.
